Why hair goes static
Hair accumulates electrical charge when:
- It's very dry (water normally dissipates charge)
- It rubs against synthetic fabrics, hats, brushes
- Air humidity is very low (below 30%)
- Plastic combs or brushes
The dry strands repel each other, causing the "floating halo" look.
The immediate fix
- Damp your fingers, run through hair
- Lightly mist with a leave-in conditioner spray
- Metal spoon or metal comb — the metal transfers charge away from hair
- Touch a metal surface (radiator, faucet) to ground yourself
The longer-term fix
Static is a moisture + lipid issue. If you're frequently static:
- Humidifier in winter (raise indoor humidity to 40–50%)
- Richer conditioner — richer equals more lipids
- Leave-in serum daily on dry hair
- Silk pillowcase (cotton pulls water from hair overnight)
- Wooden or boar-bristle brush (not plastic)
- Ceramide leave-in on dry days
Ingredients that help
- Ceramides (Ceramide 3, Fatty alcohol, conditioning. NOT drying.">Cetearyl Alcohol blends)
- Panthenol (holds water in hair)
- Glycerin (in normal humidity; skip in dry winter)
- Natural oils as seal layer (jojoba, argan)
- Dimethicone.">Amodimethicone (conditioning silicone, anti-static)
Ingredients/habits to limit
- Alcohol denat. high in INCI leave-ins
- Over-washing
- Cotton towels rubbed on hair
- Wool hats direct on hair (wear a silk scarf underneath)
- Plastic brushes
Seasonal static patterns
Winter (dry cold air)
- Humidifier essential
- Richer products
- Plastic combs out; wood or metal in
- Silk under winter hats
Dry summer (arid climates)
- Lightweight leave-in daily
- Skip glycerin
- Seal with light oil
Humid summer
- Shouldn't have static; if you do, you're over-washing
Related signals
Static + dry ends + frizz = moisture deficit. Follow a moisture recovery plan.
Static + breakage + brittle feel = possibly damage; consider bond-building.
Static + oily roots = split care — hydrate ends, use lighter products at scalp.
Where Mutaly addresses this
Static is one of the balance signals tracked by the Mutaly quiz — it indicates moisture deficit and triggers recommendations for humectant + lipid products.
