Breakage vs shedding
Shedding: Long hair coming out with the bulb (white dot) at the root. Normal — 50–100 strands/day.
Breakage: Short hairs with a point or even snap, no bulb. Not normal — signals damage.
Mix of both often means the hair is so fragile it's breaking before it can reach full-length shedding.
Eight causes
1. Protein-moisture imbalance
Either extreme — too much protein or too much moisture — weakens the strand. Most common cause.
Fix: Read protein-moisture balance article.
2. Chemical damage
Bleach is #1 cause. Also: permanent color lift, relaxers, keratin treatments gone wrong.
Fix: Stop the chemical, start bond-building treatments, accept you may need to cut.
3. Heat damage
High temperatures without protection. 200°C+ breaks disulfide bonds permanently.
Fix: Lower temp, use protectant, rest heat tools for 2+ weeks to assess.
4. Mechanical stress
Tight hairstyles, rough brushing, towel-scrubbing, hairbands at the same spot.
Fix: Silk pillowcase, loose styles, change pony spot daily, seamless combs.
5. Dryness
Hair that's dry has no flexibility. It can't bend without snapping.
Fix: Regular deep conditioning, leave-ins, seal with oil.
6. Nutrient deficiency
Iron, vitamin D, B12, biotin deficiencies cause weak new hair growth.
Fix: Blood test, supplement if needed, balanced diet.
7. Hormonal shifts
Pregnancy, postpartum, menopause, thyroid issues affect hair strength.
Fix: See endocrinologist if persistent, support with gentle care.
8. Health conditions
Thyroid disease, iron deficiency anemia, autoimmune issues, medication side effects.
Fix: Medical evaluation.
Quick triage
Find short broken hairs + stretchy wet hair → protein deficit Short breakage + crunchy dry hair → moisture deficit Breakage on one side or in one spot → mechanical cause Breakage across whole head + shedding → health issue
Emergency repair routine
Week 1–2: Stop all heat. Switch to silk pillowcase. Detangle only wet with conditioner.
Week 3: Add bond-building treatment (Olaplex No.3, K18, Redken Acidic Bonding).
Week 4: Light protein mask if stretchy. Moisture mask if crunchy.
Week 5–8: Maintain gentle routine. Breakage should reduce by 50–70%.
What to check on INCI
Pro for breakage:
- Hydrolyzed keratin, wheat, silk
- Panthenol
- Behentrimonium methosulfate
- Ceramides
Avoid:
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate daily
- Alcohol denat. high in leave-ins
- Very heavy silicones at roots
When it's medical
- Breakage all over the scalp
- Accompanied by visible thinning
- Happening despite perfect routine
- Bald patches
See a trichologist or dermatologist. These could be alopecia, traction damage, or a systemic condition.
