The truth about split ends
Once a hair is split, no product permanently rejoins it. Products that claim to "repair" splits actually coat the split with silicones or polymers, giving a smooth feel for a day or two. Then they wash out, and the split continues to travel upward.
The only real fix: cut the split off.
Causes
- Mechanical friction (cotton pillows, rough towel-drying, tight ponytails)
- Chemical damage (bleach, permanent color, relaxers)
- Heat without protection
- Dryness that makes the hair brittle
- Hard water (mineral deposits weaken strands)
- Old hair (length hair is years old — it accumulates damage)
Four types of splits
Classic two-way split: Y-shape at the end. Most common.
Three-way or multiple splits: Ends have frayed into several branches. More damage, longer neglect.
Mid-shaft split: Split forms higher up the strand, not at the end. Sign of deeper damage.
Tree split or "fairy knots": Small split-offs mid-strand that look like branches. Common in very curly hair.
Prevention
Protect the cuticle
- Silk/satin pillowcase
- Microfiber towel, never rub — blot or plop
- Wide-tooth comb only, on wet hair with conditioner
- No backcombing, no teasing
Moisture and seal
- Leave-in on ends every wash
- Light oil (argan, jojoba, sebum.">squalane) on ends daily
- Weekly deep conditioning mask
Heat rules
- Max 150°C (300°F) for damaged hair
- Always heat protectant spray
- Limit heat styling to 2x per week
Trim on schedule
- Every 8–12 weeks
- "Dusting" (micro-trim) every 4 weeks for length-lovers
- Don't delay — splits travel up and you lose more length in the long run
"Repair" products — what they actually do
Silicone-based serums (Dimethicone, cyclomethicone) fill the split physically. Looks good, feels smooth, washes out.
Bond-builders (Olaplex, K18) can partially rebuild internal protein bonds but don't fuse split cuticles.
Protein masks temporarily plug gaps in the cuticle. Useful for tensile strength.
None actually fix splits. Use these to stretch time between trims, not to replace them.
If you're growing hair out
Dust every 4 weeks: removes only 1–2mm, keeps ends from fraying further. You'll gain more length over a year than if you let splits run.
When to see a stylist
- More than 25% of ends are split
- Splits reaching mid-length
- Very frayed, "cotton candy" ends
Sometimes a significant cut resets faster than years of patching.
What Mutaly factors in
The Mutaly quiz considers your damage level, chemical treatment history, and heat use — and adjusts both routine and trim cadence recommendations.
