What sensitive scalp feels like
A sensitive scalp reacts to things a normal scalp ignores. Signals:
- Burning or tingling when applying products
- Sudden itching, not chronic
- Redness or warmth without an obvious cause
- Painful to touch or brush
- Reacts to temperature changes, sun, wind
Sensitivity can be constitutional (your skin type) or acquired (damaged barrier from over-treatment). Either way, the approach is the same: identify triggers, strip them out, rebuild the barrier.
Common triggers
Surfactants: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), surfactant. Very cleansing, drying.">Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate — the harshest.
Fragrances: Parfum / Fragrance / essential oils in concentrated form. The #1 contact allergen.
Preservatives: MI/MCI (methylisothiazolinone), formaldehyde releasers (DMDM Hydantoin, Quaternium-15).
Color chemistry: PPD (p-phenylenediamine) in dark permanent dyes. Allergies often build up after years of exposure.
Temperature: Very hot water, hot air from dryers, direct sun.
Mechanical: Tight hairstyles, rough brushing, harsh towel-drying.
Building a sensitive-safe routine
Cleanse gently
- Shampoo with Cocamidopropyl Betaine + Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate or Decyl Glucoside — all mild.
- Fragrance-free if possible. "Unscented" is not always fragrance-free; check INCI.
- Lukewarm water, never hot.
Condition carefully
- Avoid leave-on products with MI/MCI — they're banned in leave-on in the EU but still appear elsewhere.
- Patch test every new product on inner elbow for 24 hours before full scalp use.
Strengthen the barrier
- Panthenol and niacinamide in a scalp serum help rebuild skin resilience over weeks.
- Colloidal oatmeal masks for immediate calming.
- Centella asiatica (Madecassoside) for redness and inflammation.
Skip these
- Strong menthol or peppermint ("tingling" shampoos)
- Salicylic acid if it causes burning (test first)
- Anything labeled "volumizing" (often contains surfactants and alcohols)
When sensitivity is allergy
A true allergy causes a delayed reaction (12–72 hours), often with:
- Swelling
- Blistering or oozing
- Rash beyond the scalp
This needs a dermatologist. Patch testing can identify the specific allergen. PPD allergy (common with dark dyes) can be serious and requires lifetime avoidance.
When sensitivity is really sensitization
Some products don't cause allergy per se but strip your skin until everything burns. Alcohol denat. in many leave-ins is a common culprit. Stopping all active products for 2 weeks, then reintroducing one at a time, often fixes this.
Quick triage if your scalp is burning now
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water
- Apply a thin layer of aloe gel or pure panthenol serum
- Skip all products for 48 hours
- Wash with a fragrance-free baby shampoo (tear-free means mild surfactants)
- If burning continues 3+ days → doctor
Why it matters for product selection
Sensitive scalp + oily roots needs different products than sensitive scalp + dry roots. Sensitive scalp + color-treated hair rules out PPD and many preservatives.
The Mutaly quiz flags sensitivity and prioritizes gentle, low-irritant product matches across all categories.
