What protein overload is

Hair is mostly protein (keratin) — but only about 85%. It also needs water and lipids. When you add too much external protein (hydrolyzed keratin, wheat protein, silk proteins, amino acids) through masks and leave-ins, the strand can become over-saturated. The result: stiff, brittle hair.

This is counter-intuitive — you'd think "protein = stronger hair." But hair needs flexibility as much as strength. Over-proteined hair has strength without flex. It snaps instead of bending.

Seven signs

  1. Stiff, "plastic" feel when dry. Hair doesn't move naturally.
  2. Crunchy texture that doesn't soften after conditioning.
  3. Increased breakage despite no new damage.
  4. Dryness that conditioner doesn't fix. The more you condition, the worse it gets.
  5. Won't hold a style. Curls fall flat, waves won't form.
  6. Hair feels dense but lifeless — heavy without being nourishing.
  7. Snaps in small pieces with minimal tension.

Who's at risk

  • Curly hair users who do CGM aggressively
  • Damaged hair that got treated daily with protein
  • Keratin treatment clients continuing to use protein at home
  • Anyone doing weekly protein masks without alternating moisture
  • Product junkies — most leave-ins contain some protein

How it happens

Protein molecules fill gaps in the cuticle temporarily. In moderation, this reinforces damaged hair. In excess, the protein layer becomes rigid and prevents flexibility. The strand becomes brittle.

This happens faster in:

  • High porosity hair (absorbs more)
  • Already damaged hair
  • Hair that's alkaline (cuticle open)

The fix — 30-day protocol

Week 1: Stop all protein

  • Check INCI on every product — eliminate: Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Silk, Amino Acids, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein
  • Use protein-free shampoo and conditioner
  • Deep moisturize with a mask containing glycerin, aloe, shea

Week 2: Heavy moisture

  • Weekly hydrating mask, 15 min
  • Daily water-based leave-in
  • Light oil seal at night

Week 3: Assess

  • Hair should feel softer, more flexible
  • If still crunchy, continue moisture-only
  • If improving, maintain routine

Week 4: Reintroduce carefully

  • If you still need protein (very damaged hair), use a very light formula once
  • Monitor — if crunch returns, skip

Preventing recurrence

  • Alternate protein and moisture masks weekly
  • Read INCI on everything
  • Bond-builders ≠ protein (use bond-builders freely)
  • Monthly moisture mask even if using daily protein leave-in

Quick check: am I about to overload?

You likely will if:

  • Every product you use contains protein
  • You do weekly protein masks AND use protein leave-in daily
  • You're using keratin treatments plus at-home protein
  • Your hair is low porosity (absorbs less protein, overload can happen faster)

The takeaway

Protein is powerful. Like any powerful tool, too much causes the opposite effect. Balance is the goal.

The Mutaly quiz detects protein-excess signals and recommends only the amount needed.
