You have a normal scalp — congratulations

A normal scalp:

  • Doesn't feel oily for 2–3 days after washing
  • No flaking, redness, or persistent itching
  • Comfortable between washes
  • Doesn't react badly to most products

This is the goal state. The temptation is to over-treat it anyway — don't. Over-care is the #1 way to create imbalance.

The simple maintenance routine

Wash 2–3 times per week

More often strips the natural barrier. Less often lets sebum oxidize and cause odor or dullness.

Mild, sulfate-free shampoo

Daily-use formulas with Cocamidopropyl Betaine + Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate are gentle enough to preserve your balance.

Conditioner mid-lengths to ends only

Keep conditioner off the scalp. Your scalp doesn't need added oils.

Lukewarm water

Hot water strips sebum faster than necessary.

Finish cool

A cool rinse flattens cuticles — shinier hair, less frizz.

Monthly maintenance

  • Scalp scrub once a month — gentle exfoliation prevents slow buildup
  • Clarifying shampoo once every 4–6 weeks if you use styling products or have hard water
  • Light scalp oil pre-wash (jojoba, squalane) once a month — bonus nourishment

Avoid these common mistakes

  • Over-washing when hair feels slightly greasy on day 3 (normal)
  • Switching shampoo constantly — stick with what works
  • Piling on new "miracle" products — your scalp doesn't need them
  • Daily dry shampoo — it causes buildup over time
  • Sleeping with unbrushed wet hair — can cause bacterial growth

Signs something's shifting

Watch for:

  • Scalp feels tight after washing → drier than before
  • Greasy within 1 day of washing → sebum regulation off
  • New itch or flakes → barrier issue developing

Act early. Small adjustments (wash less, switch to gentler shampoo) often prevent problems from settling in.

What your hair still needs

A normal scalp doesn't mean you skip all treatments. Your hair (length, ends) still needs:

  • Hydration (mask 1x per week)
  • Protein (treatment every 2–4 weeks)
  • Heat protection if you style
  • Protection from UV in summer
  • Trims every 8–12 weeks

When to step up

Life changes affect scalp:

  • Seasons (winter = drier, summer = oilier)
  • Hormonal shifts (pregnancy, menopause, cycle)
  • Stress periods
  • Illness or medication

Adjust frequency and products as needed rather than sticking rigidly to a routine.

Maintain the good state

Your routine should be boring. Boring is working. The Mutaly quiz helps calibrate a minimal maintenance routine for your full hair profile without over-treating.
