What bleach does

Bleach (hydrogen peroxide + ammonia + persulfates):

  • Opens the cuticle aggressively
  • Dissolves melanin (and, collaterally, other pigments)
  • Breaks disulfide bonds — the strongest bonds in hair
  • Creates permanent porosity
  • Reduces tensile strength by 25–40%

No conditioning product fully reverses this. Bleached hair is always more fragile than virgin hair.

Rule zero: prevent further damage

  • No heat above 150°C (300°F) — ever
  • No chlorine or salt water without protection
  • No fresh bleach over bleach without 6+ weeks between sessions
  • No fresh color over bleach without bond-builders

The recovery routine

Wash day

  • Purple shampoo 1x per week (neutralizes brass)
  • Sulfate-free clear shampoo 1–2x per week
  • Always follow with bond-building or moisturizing mask (5–10 min)

Between washes

  • Leave-in conditioner daily on mid-length + ends
  • Light oil on ends (argan, sebum.">squalane) nightly
  • Silk pillowcase

Weekly deep treatments

Alternate:

  • Week 1: Olaplex No.3, K18.">Bond-builder (Olaplex No.3, K18 mask, Redken Acidic Bonding) on wet hair, 10 min
  • Week 2: Protein mask (hydrolyzed keratin/wheat)
  • Week 3: Deep moisture mask (shea butter, panthenol)
  • Repeat

Monthly

  • Trim splits — bleach encourages them
  • Check in with stylist on scalp and strand health

Ingredients to look for

Repair:

  • Hydrolyzed keratin, silk, quinoa proteins
  • Amino acids (arginine, glycine)
  • Bond-builders (hybrid esters, proprietary peptides)
  • Ceramides

Moisture:

  • Shea butter
  • Panthenol
  • Hyaluronic acid (yes, in hair products)

Seal:

  • Argan oil
  • Squalane
  • Jojoba oil
  • Light silicones (Dimethicone copolyol — water-soluble)

Ingredients to avoid

  • Sulfates daily
  • Alcohol denat. high in INCI of leave-ins
  • Clarifying shampoos more than once a month
  • Heavy silicones at roots

Purple/blue shampoo — how to use

To neutralize brass/orange tones:

  • Apply to dry or wet hair
  • Leave 3–5 minutes (longer if very brassy)
  • Don't use more than 1x per week — it can dry hair
  • Follow with conditioner

The real timeline

Realistic expectation: with perfect care, bleached hair feels healthier in 8–12 weeks. It won't feel virgin again until you grow it out and cut off the bleached length — usually 12–18+ months.

Going back to natural

If you want to grow out and reclaim health:

  • Color matcher (dye roots to match length) — less harsh than another bleach
  • Color-correct to medium tone
  • Grow 4–6 inches, trim damage progressively
  • Or "the big chop" — cut most damage at once

Scalp care

Bleach irritates scalp too. Use a gentle shampoo and consider scalp serums with panthenol and niacinamide to restore the barrier.

What Mutaly adjusts for bleached hair

Mutaly's quiz flags bleach as high-damage input and shifts recommendations toward bond-builders, rich moisturizers, and low-protein daily care.
